How to pronounce it

  • esperanza: es-peh-RAHN-sah. Hope. From esperar, which means both to hope and to wait; Spanish knows they are the same act.
  • caridad: kah-ree-DAHD. Love. The Reina-Valera of 1909 uses caridad exactly where the King James says charity.
  • empero: em-PEH-roh. But, however. An old and stately word; modern Spanish would say pero.

Common questions

How do you say faith, hope, and love in Spanish?+

"la fe, la esperanza, y la caridad." The verse ends: "empero la mayor de ellas es la caridad", but the greatest of these is love.

Why does the Spanish say caridad instead of amor?+

The Reina-Valera of 1909 renders love as caridad, just as the King James renders it charity. Modern Spanish Bibles say amor. Same word in the Greek, same meaning: self-giving love.

What does verse 7 say word by word?+

"Todo lo sufre, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta": everything it endures, everything it believes, everything it hopes, everything it bears. Four verbs, one drumbeat of todo.
